PARTNER WITH SCANWELL

Since 2019, Scanwell and FIND (Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics) have been working to develop a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) Reader App to aid in the interpretation of malaria tests in LMICs

The app uses computer vision algorithms that can interpret results to help healthcare workers in low- and middle-income countries accurately diagnose malaria. Data from the app will feed into surveillance systems designed to help combat antimicrobial resistance.

Our scanning library supports the following three RDTs
These RDTs have all been prequalified by the World Health Organization
Scanwell developed these algorithms independently from the RDT manufacturers.
ABOUT

The SD BIOLINE Malaria Ag P.f/P.v test is a rapid, qualitative and differential test for the detection of histidine-rich protein II (HRP-II) antigen of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH) of Plasmodium vivax in human whole blood.

PERFORMANCE RESULTS

Clinical: 98.9% agreement with visual interpretation. The clinical performance of the SD Bioline test with the RDT Reader App was evaluated in a prospective, multi-center study in Cambodia and showed that the app could be used effectively and accurately in the hands of intended users in the field. The overall agreement of the system with visual interpretation was 98.9% ( 98.3% positive agreement and 99.8% negative agreement).

ABOUT

CareStart Malaria Pf/Pv (HRP2/pLDH) Ag Combo RDT test is a lateral flow antigen detection test in a cassette format. It is intended to be used for the rapid qualitative detection of malaria HRP2 (histidine-rich protein 2) of P.falciparum and pLDH (plasmodium lactate dehydrogenase) of P.vivax in human whole blood as an aid in the diagnosis of malaria infection.

PERFORMANCE RESULTS

Clinical: 99.3% overall agreement with visual interpretation

The clinical performance of the CareStart test with the RDT Reader App was evaluated in a prospective, multi-center study in Rwanda, Indonesia and Sudan and showed that the app could be used effectively and accurately in the hands of intended users in the field. The overall agreement of the system with visual interpretation was 99.3% ( 97.7% positive agreement and 99.73% negative agreement).

Benchtop: 99.2% overall agreement with visual interpretation

The analytical performance of the CareStart test with the RDT Reader App was evaluated in a benchtop study, in which images of the RDTs were captured under various lighting environments (meant to emulate field lighting conditions). This showed good agreement with a trained operator’s visual interpretation with overall agreement of 99.16% (98.32% positive agreement and 100% negative agreement).
ABOUT

First Response® Malaria Antigen P. falciparum (HRP2) Card Test is intended to be performed by trained users (in either laboratory and point of care settings) as qualitative screening in vitro diagnostic test for detection of P. falciparum specific HRP2 antigens.

PERFORMANCE RESULTS

Clinical:
98.1% agreement with visual interpretation.

The clinical performance of the First Response test with the RDT Reader App was evaluated in a prospective, multi-center study in Rwanda, Indonesia and Sudan and showed that the app could be used effectively and accurately in the hands of intended users in the field. The overall agreement of the system with visual interpretation was 98.1% ( 95.0% positive agreement and 99.8% negative agreement).
