Frequently Asked Questions
about UTIs

What causes UTIs?

50% of all women will experience a UTI. Risk factors include:

  • Sexual activity
  • Previous UTIs
  • Vaginal infection
  • Certain hygiene habits (like wiping from back to front, instead of front to back).

How do I know if I have a UTI?

The majority of UTIs can be detected with a urine test. Scanwell's UTI Self Test Kit and app work together to identify a UTI in 2 minutes.

Our test strips are the same as those used in urgent care, emergency rooms, and hospitals.

What are common symptoms of UTIs?

Signs of a UTI include:

  • Painful or burning urination
  • Frequent urination
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Blood in urine
  • Cloudy urine
  • Strange-smelling urine

How are UTIs treated?

Many women swear by cranberry juice, probiotics or apple cider vinegar/herbal remedies to help fend off a UTI. However, studies show that these home remedies have limited clinical efficacy in prevention or treatment.

UTIs are caused by bacteria, so the most effective treatment for them is taking antibiotics.

How can UTIs be prevented?

Taking D-mannose supplements, staying hydrated and practicing good hygiene can decrease your risk of getting a UTI. Whenever possible:
  • Urinate after sex
  • Wipe from front to back
  • Pee as soon as you feel the need; don't hold it in!
  • Take showers instead of baths
  • Avoid harsh or scented soaps

Think you might have a UTI?

As soon as something feels, looks, or smells off — it’s time to test.
